[Archived] Support users with no internet connection

Reason for archiving: Offline editing does not comply with Cochrane's toolset vision and RevMan Web's vision

What business value does this roadmap item create? / Which problem is this roadmap item trying to solve?

Offline editing is considered crucial by many of our users for two reasons:
To ensure equity by enabling contributors to work on Cochrane reviews all over the world where there might not be an internet connection;

  • 3 users reported that they reverted to use RevMan 5 to work offline in the feedback form.
  • At all previous Colloquia, offline editing has been mentioned as a blocker.
  • During the UK & Ireland Symposium 2019 two Managing Editors expressed clear worry during a RoB 2 session as they expected their internet connection would not be good enough for editing online.
  • Offline editing was one of the reasons MEs does not recommend RevMan Web to authors in the ME survey for 8 out of 31 MEs.

How can the value delivered be measured?

It's unclear how many authors would be impacted if there is no offline editing.

Which assumptions are made in relation to the value?

There are Cochrane contributors that are not able to work in RevMan Web because they have no internet connection.
Most contributors will experience drops in internet connection over time while working in RevMan Web and this is problematic.
“Our users expects to be able to work offline because they are used to do that in RevMan 5. They would not expect the same for Archie, Covidence or Google“. Note: Google docs has an offline mode and so does GRADEpro but Covidence and Archie does not.

What are the dependencies for fulfilling the business value?

We know little about how our user’s internet connection impacts their work in RevMan Web.

For now, RevMan 5 can be used as an offline editing tool.

What are the risks related to this roadmap item?

Spending too much time on a sophisticated solution when something simple would be enough.
The use cases for working with partner web tools are unclear.
