Email attachments

Successful sending and delivery of emails from within Editorial Manager may be affected by:

  • maximum attachment size limit
  • maximum total message send/receive size limit
  • recipient's personal and/or institutional email inbox settings

Attachment and message size limits

These vary widely by email provider and application.

The attachment size limit in Microsoft (Office) 365 is 50 MB. The maximum total message send/receive size can be up to 150 MB.

Other external email systems can have smaller limits. Some common receiving limits are:

  • GMail – 50MB
  • Outlook.com – 50MB (free Outlook accounts)
  • Yahoo – 25MB
  • Peer universities – limit varies by institution

Delivery failures

These limits mean that a message with one or more large attachment(s) can show as successfully delivered on the Editorial Manager Correspondence History, but may not have been received by the recipient.

Where possible, it is advised to use a file collaboration tool (Dropbox, OneDrive) for large files. When sharing RevMan versions you can also share the link to a specific version of compared version. See Versions of reviews.
