Article sharing

Providing guidance on the Cochrane Library editorial policy on open access and article sharing.

PubMed and PubMed Central

PubMed and PubMed Central are databases hosted by the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine (NIH/NLM). PubMed contains citations and abstracts of biomedical literature. PubMed Central (PMC) is a free full-text archive (repository) of biomedical and life sciences journal articles.

Delivery

Upon publication in the CDSR, Wiley delivers information on the following article types to PubMed for citation indexing: protocols, reviews, updates, editorials, and articles amended with a new citation.

Simultaneously, Wiley delivers the same article types to PubMed Central, to be made available in the free full-text PMC archive either immediately (i.e. within 48 hours of receipt), or after an embargo period of 12 months:

  • Protocols and editorials (any licence type): Available immediately
  • Reviews, updates, and amendments with a new citation:
    • Gold OA licence: Available immediately
    • Green OA licence: Available after 12 months

Note that publishing an amendment with a new citation on Green OA reviews or updates will initiate a new 12-month embargo period. In rare circumstances when an amendment with new citation is needed, but the embargo period should not be extended – for example, if an error is found in an author's name, which would necessitate a new citation but should not penalize the authors with a restart of the 12-month embargo period – Wiley can submit a support ticket to PubMed Central to request an adjustment. Authors may also deliver their articles to PubMed Central manually; see the editorial policy for applicable details.
